Mission Statement

The Mission of Catholic Charities is to care for and assist in the care of those in need within the Diocese of Calgary. The Mission, therefore, is concerned with justice, which focuses “above all in the protection of the weak” (Tertio Millennio Adveniente page 20).

In acting out its mission, Catholic Charities fulfills its obligation to support the poor and the oppressed as they struggle to preserve their worth and dignity as human beings. The poor are the primary and particular concern of Catholic Charities. The poor are described as the people who are socially, financially, physically, emotionally and spiritually weak and threatened.

Allocation of Together In Action Funds

In keeping with its Mission, and through the generosity and concern of those who donate to Catholic Charities and the Together In Action campaign (formerly known as the Annual Bishop’s Appeal or ABA), Catholic Charities is able to support a growing number and diversity of agencies and programs within Southern Alberta.  In the spring of each year, an extensive review of applications for funding is conducted and funding recommendations are made to the Advisory Board of Catholic Charities and then presented to the Bishop.

Other Programs and Projects

In addition to the funds granted to agencies through the allocation process, Catholic Charities offers programs and supports projects which are funded through donations designated specifically to those programs (eg. Elizabeth House, Feed the Hungry, and Latour Native Ministry) or donations to be used at Catholic Charities’ discretion (eg. Society of St. Vincent de Paul).
