Humanitarian Aid Relief for Haiti

The Diocese of Calgary is participating in the humanitarian aid relief for the earthquake victims in Haiti, launched by the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP).

CCODP has already committed a first pledge of $50,000 to Caritas Haiti, which runs 200 medical clinics in the country but is in dire need of financial resources to respond to the growing humanitarian needs of this growing humanitarian in crisis.

“Caritas Haiti can count on our support to help them provide first aid supplies, food, shelter and other basic necessities. Our thoughts are with the people of Haiti in this time of crisis and we are anxiously awaiting news from our partners there. We are concerned for their safety and well-being,” said Michael Casey, Executive Director of CCODP.

All donations received by CCODP will be sent directly to its partners on the ground in Haiti, mainly Caritas Haiti.

Donations, as usual, can be made in two ways:
  • The preferred way: Cheques to be made payable and sent to the Parish, earmarked “D and P Haiti Aid”. Collected funds will be sent to the Diocese for transfer to CCODP (tax receipts will be issued by the parish).
  • Cheques can be made out and sent to the Diocese (“R.C. Diocese of Calgary”) earmarked “D and P Haiti Aid” (tax receipts will be issued by the Diocese).
Federal Government will match contributions (CBC News): “Minister of International Co-operation Bev Oda said Thursday morning the government will match the contributions of individuals to eligible Canadian charitable organizations in support of humanitarian and recovery efforts in response to the earthquake, up to a total of $50 million.”

The Canadian Organization for Development and Peace is one of the “eligible Canadian organizations.”  The money it collects for and puts into its relief projects in Haiti will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the federal government.
